I love a statement my friend Jeremiah said to me the other day. He was quoting from a pastor, and it was profound to my heart. He said, “We are just the donkey that Jesus has chosen to ride in on.” I love that! Jesus is always to be the main focus, not the donkey. It’s his ministry, his church, his love, his power, his signs and wonders. I’m just so glad I get to be a donkey he choses to ride on from time to time.
I also recalled something Peter said in Acts 3 after the lame beggar was healed. “Why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?” (Acts 3:12-13)
I love these two questions Peter asks: “Why does this surprise you?” I think it’s clear we should expect and not be surprised by healings, miracles and displays of God’s radical love toward us and through us. This is normal Christianity. He also asks, “Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?” It’s his grace, his goodness, that heals the sick, casts out demons, and brings the prodigals home.
These things don’t authenticate the donkey but the One riding in.
